The life of a Spartan soldier was inseparable from that of his fellow soldiers. He ate, slept, and trained with them. They were allowed to marry, but couldn’t live with their wives since they spent most of their time fighting in wars or training. They also didn’t participate in sporting events (such as the Olympics) since according to Sparta’s standards sports were for kids and women, men should only spend their energy fighting in wars....

It’s sort of like those silly state laws that somehow made it onto the books because someone actually tied their tiger to a light pole one time back in the 1800s. Surely tying tigers to light poles is not good for society, but is the rule actually necessary? Similarly, confiscating every bottle of toothpaste just because it is over an arbitrary size seems…arbitrary. The bad guys can’t be that dumb can they?...

Roughly 47 extant species of chimaera exist in Earth’s oceans today, however it’s believed that these freaky fish were once an incredibly populous and diverse family found all across the world, with the first examples showing up in the fossil record around 280 million years ago.
